WPS MVH employees sponsor dog for K9s for Warriors

MADISON, Wis.-Sept. 27, 2017—WPS Military and Veterans Health employees raised funds to sponsor a service dog for an injured military veteran through the K9s for Warriors program.

Our team raised more than $20,000 to sponsor the training of Shadow, a German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix. After graduating from the training program, Shadow went home with his Wounded Warrior, Melinda.

“(Melinda) was so optimistic about returning home to Idaho and being able to live a ‘normal’ life with Shadow by her side,” said Tracey Carlson, a VA Quality Assurance Supervisor for WPS Military and Veterans Health. “Her statement echoes the program’s mission statement: ‘To empower them to return to civilian life with dignity and independence.’”

WPS is committed to supporting community programs that help military personnel and veterans, but K9s for Warriors has an added bonus.

“Not only is the program benefiting our veterans,” Carlson said. “it is also saving hundreds of canine lives. Shadow was rescued from a shelter and donated to K9s for Warriors, so the organization is essentially saving two lives—the dog and the veteran.”
